Etna volcano (Italy): small earthquakes

Dienstag Nov 05, 2013 06:57 | VON: T

Location of the 2.9 earthquake under Etna this morning

Seismic trace of several earthquakes (ESPC station)
Seismic trace of several earthquakes (ESPC station)
While the summit craters have remained calm, seismic activity shows continuing unrest at the volcano. A number of relatively shallow earthquakes occurred this morning under the volcano.
The only quake located by an international agency was a 2.9 magnitude event at 05:30 (GMT) at 18 km depth under the SW flank, while the other earthquakes were too small to be included, but appear to be shallower. More precise data will hopefully be available soon from INGV Catania.

Lava fountain at the New SE crater
Samstag, Okt 26, 2013
Following a slow gradual build-up of increasing strombolian activity at Etna's New SE crater since yesterday, a new paroxysm is now in the progress, with high lava fountains, lava flows, and a tall ash plume. ... [mehr]
Map of yesterday's earthquakes under Etna (marker shows one of the two mag 2.7 events)
Donnerstag, Okt 10, 2013
A swarm of shallow earthquakes occurred yesterday under the SE flank, below Monte Arcimis near Tarderia (Pedara) at depths of 2.7-5.6 km. The two largest events were magnitude 2.7 and felt by local residents. [mehr]

Sonntag, Okt 06, 2013
The New SE crater has resumed weak, sporadic strombolian activity with small ash emissions. This goes along with an increase of the tremor signal today. The situation is certainly worth following! [mehr]

Sonntag, Sep 22, 2013
Sporadic small ash emissions have reappeared from the New SE crater during the past days, although weather conditions did not often allow direct observation. Since about 4 days ago, tremor has been showing a slowly rising trend, although it is still at low levels. [mehr]
