Agung volcano (Bali, Indonesia): alert level raised

Following increase of earthquakes and fumarolic activity in the crater, Indonesia's volcano monitoring agency PVMBG raised the alert level of the volcano, first to 2 on 14 Sep and to 3, the second highest on the 1-4 scale, a few days ago.
What exactly is currently happening at the volcano is unclear. The decision to raise the alert again was probably at least partially based on what is described as a thermal signal in or near the crater and a gray ash plume from the volcano, although it was soon confirmed that the latter came from a forest fire and not from any eruptive volcanic activity.
Another (good) motivation to raise the alert is the fact that Agung counts as an extremely hazardous volcano in case of eruption: its often explosive eruptions typically produce pyroclastic and mud flows that would travel down its steep-sided flanks and directly threaten many villages.
During its last eruption in 1963-64, devastating pyroclastic flows reached distances of up to 15 km from the crater and killed more than 1000 people, marking one of the worst volcanic disasters in Indonesia's history.
