New lava dome at Nicanor crater detected by satellite image from 15 September (image: @volcanologiachl/twitter)
The new lava dome is currently about 27 meters wide and 40 meters long in an NW-SE pattern.
Instruments detected increased ground deformation. This is likely reflecting continued magma intrusion and migration under the surface, supported also by continued deformation of the surface.
This is the third lava dome since 2016. Previous domes were destroyed by explosive events on growing lava domes.
