Copahue volcano (Chile / Argentina): activity seems to have ended

Sonntag Dez 30, 2012 10:25 | VON: T

MODIS thermal anomaly at Copahue (summarized data from 28-30 Dec)
MODIS thermal anomaly at Copahue (summarized data from 28-30 Dec)
Visual and seismic activity have decreased at Copahue and no more ash emissions or incandescence have been observed since 29 Dec. It is thought that the small eruption that had started on 22 Dec has ended. It has emplaced a small body of lava (a lava dome) inside the crater which is now cooling, but still visible as a thermal anomaly on MODIS satellite data.
SERNAGEOMIN has lowered the alert level to yellow. ONEMI (Civil protection) maintains yellow alert for the community of Alto Biobio, mainly for the hazard of lahars.
