With its 5911 m it also ranks among the world's highest active volcanoes (26th highest). The majestic, snow covered symmetrical stratovolcano is located on the Eastern Cordillera of the Ecuadorian Andes, 60 km south of Quito and 35 km northeast of Latacunga. Cotopaxi's steep cone has nested summit craters, the outer of which measures 550 x 800 m in diameter. Cotopaxi erupted more than 50 times since 1738. The most violent historical eruptions of Cotopaxi volcano were in 1744, 1768, 1877, and 1904. its eruptions often produced pyroclastic flows and destructive mud flows (lahars). Some lahars have travelled more than 100 km and reached the Pacific to the west and the Amazon Basin to the east. At the moment, it has been dormant for over 70 years, which is an unusual long interval in its recent history.

The volcano has been showing signs of unrest. Since mid-April this year, and particularly during May, a marked increased in earthquakes and SO2 emissions have been detected, which could be signs of a magma intrusion beneath the volcano. During May, about 3000 local earthquakes were recorded, a significant increased compared to April (628 quakes), and more than during the last seismic crisis in 2001-02. In particular, long-period earthquakes related to internal fluid movements have shown an increase in May. Most quakes were located in areas north and northeast of the volcano's summit, at two depth layers, one at shallow 3 km and others at deeper depths of up to 14 km. In addition, SO2 emissions have shown an increased from normal values of approx. 500 tons / day to 2500-3000 tons per day. At the crater, fumarolic activity has increased during May. During the weekend of 22 and 23 May, sulfur smell the upper northern flank was very intense. Very slight deformation has occurred on the N and NE flanks, suggesting a trend towards inflation, IGPEN reported. For now, the signs of volcanic unrest are small and there is no indication that a new eruption is imminent, but the current unrest could be a medium to long term precursor to a possible new eruption, which would be the first since 1942. --- Links / Quelle: Vorherige NachrichtenSaturday, Oct 05, 2013 IGPEN surveyed the volcano on 20 Sep. Maximum temperatures in the active crater were found at 55.7 °C and no unusual signs of activity or significant morphological changes compared to recent years were observed.
[mehr]Monday, Jan 28, 2013 What seems to be a strong seismic swarm has been visible on recent seismograms, but IGPEN has not issued any notes about this otherwise interesting activity, it is suspected that the VC1 station at the NE base of the volcano is either malfunctioning, showing something else or simply having a very strong magnification of normal backgroud seismicity.
[mehr]Wednesday, Jan 23, 2013 Another pulse of volcanic earthquakes is in progress under Cotopaxi volcano. Such swarms have been occurring several times recently, but for now, can be considered as part of the normal behavior of an active, but currently dormant volcano.
[mehr]Wednesday, Jan 16, 2013 Another brief episode of volcanic earthquakes occurred during 15 Jan.
