Dukono Vulkan: News und Updates zur Tätigkeit

Dukono volcano (Halmahera Island, Indonesia): major ash plume reported, 45,000 ft altitude

Mittwoch Dez 18, 2013 13:26 | VON: T
Update: The observed cloud was a large weather cloud, NOT an ash plume, VAAC Darwin confirmed. That means that the volcano, although in a state of semi-persistent strombolian to vulcanian activity, is currently NOT having an extraordinary large eruption.
Original post:
A major eruption might have occurred at the volcano this morning: an ash plume rising to 45,000 ft (14 km) altitude and extending more than 100 km to the NW was reported by VAAC Darwin at 07:32 GMT this morning. If this IS a volcanic ash plume and not an unusually large storm cloud, it means that a major, possibly sub-plinian eruption has occurred at the volcano. We will update this post when more information is available, or post comments.

The advisory states:
CLOUD OBSERVED GROWING OVER VOLCANO SUMMIT AT LATER TIME THAN OTHER CONVECTION. SUSPECTED LOW LEVEL PLUME ALSO OBSERVED ON VISIBLE IMAGERY. HIGH LEVEL HEIGHT DERIVED FROM MTSAT-2 IR IMAGE
AND 18/0000Z MENADO SOUNDING.
NXT ADVISORY: NO LATER THAN 20131218/1700Z
