El Hierro Island eruption 2011-12 - updates part 2 Dec-March 2012

Update Tue 28 Feb 10:06
The eruption goes on at minimal intensity. No or only minimal tremor signal and a few weak earthquakes suggest that the eruption is not yet fully over and that there is a low chance it could restart. At the sea, almost no stained area of upwelling water can be recognized.
Volcanic tremor has stopped, but jacuzzi still visible
Update Sun 26 Feb 08:52
Tremor disappeared late on 25 February - the end of the eruption?
Tremor disappeared late on 25 February - the end of the eruption?
Once more, it seems that the eruption is weakening or ending. Although a weak jacuzzi and stain on the ocean remains visible on the webcam, volcanic tremor is now zero since last night (or the instruments are dead). A small number (5-10 per day, typically) of small earthquakes clustered at around 10 km depth in the SW part of the island continue.
Activity at the water surface returns
Update Thu 23 Feb 19:42
The jacuzzi above the vent has returned today
The jacuzzi above the vent has returned today
Since today, the "jacuzzi" (i.e. an area of upwelling water) above the submarine vent has become again visible and increased in strength over the day, suggesting that the eruption has picked up in intensity once again.
The research vessel Ramon Margalef and other ships have started a new bathymetry mission, which hopefully will result in a detailed mapping of the new submarine topography of the area of the vent.
Almost no tremor and no visible activity, but earthquakes continue
Update Tue 21 Feb 17:33
Earthquakes during the past 3 days at El Hierro Island (IGN)
Earthquakes during the past 3 days at El Hierro Island (IGN)
There has been little change to report for the past days. There is no or only a very weak stain above the submarine vent, which has probably more or less stopped erupting. Also, the harmonic tremor signal is still present, but at very low levels.
The only sign that the eruption is not yet completely over is the continuing earthquake activity (with 35 events recorded over the past 3 days), concentrated at 10-15 km depth in the western sector (see graphic), which could suggest ongoing magma intrusions at that depth.
Update Thu 16 Feb 23:21
The eruption is still pausing, but about 30 mostly very small earthquakes occurred today. Not much visible activity, and tremor is at minimal levels.
