Fuego volcano (Guatemala): increasing lava effusion

Mittwoch Jan 08, 2014 15:28 | VON: T

The lava flows on Fuego volcano this morning
The lava flows on Fuego volcano this morning
Current seismic signal of Fuego (FG3 station, INSIVUMEH)
Current seismic signal of Fuego (FG3 station, INSIVUMEH)
Another surge of (mainly effusive) activity occurred yesterday. The observatory detected an increase in tremor and lava flow emission, as well as moderate to strong explosions with shock waves felt in up to 15 km distance, where they rattled roofs and windows in Panimache, Morelia and other areas to the eastern side of the volcano.
Ash plumes have been rising to 4.2 km altitude (500 m above the crater) and drifted about 10 km to westerly directions.
This activity might increase further and produce significant lava flows and/or pyroclastic flows, especially due to collapse of the lava flows on the steep flanks.
Vorherige Nachrichten
Strombolian activity from Fuego volcano (CONRED)
Sonntag, Jan 05, 2014
Occasional strombolian explosions are relatively strong, producing incandescent ejections up to 100-150 m above the crater and causing incandescent avalanches around the crater. Ash plumes rose to up to 500 m. Shock waves can often be felt accompanying the explosions. [mehr]
Mild explosion from Fuego volcano (INSIVUMEH)
Donnerstag, Jan 02, 2014
The volcano's activity has remained unchanged and at relatively low levels, with weak to moderate strombolian explosions producing ash plumes of 300-700 m height. [mehr]
Current seismic signal of Fuego (FG3 station, INSIVUMEH)
Montag, Dez 16, 2013
Activity remains elevated but stable; the lava flow increased its length a bit to 600 m this morning, while explosions have become a bit weaker and occurred at rates of 2-3 per hour. Many of them produce shock waves that rattle windows and roofs of houses in nearby villages. [mehr]

Sonntag, Dez 15, 2013
An increase in activity was indicated by the volcano observatory today. The explosions (strombolian type) at the summit vent occur now at rates of 6-8 per hour and lava effusion increased. Currently, the lava flow is headed towards the Cenize canyon on the SW side. It is a possibility that this activity continues to build up towards another paroxysm, in which case the occurrence of pyroclastic flows (mainly by collapsing lava flow fronts) is a likely and dangerous scenario. [mehr]
Dienstag, Dez 10, 2013
INSIVUMEH reports 7 explosions during the past day with ash plumes up to 700 m height. [mehr]
