Fuego volcano (Guatemala): pyroclastic flow

Thursday May 19, 2016 21:42 PM | VON: T

The pyroclastic flow observed from Alotenango. Image: CONRED
A relatively large pyroclastic flow (avalanche of hot debris and ash) descended from the volcano yesterday (18 May) morning at around 10:30 local time.
The unusual aspect is that it occurred during a phase of currently low activity with no active lava flow or intense explosive activity (as during the paroxysms). There seemed not to have been any precursor signs either.
The most likely cause should be a collapse of accumulated, unstable material from previous eruptions on the upper slopes, something that would not be too unusual to happen.

Another paroxysm (the 6th this year so far) started last night at the volcano. Intermittent strombolian explosions merged into lava fountaining reaching 400 m height and increased lava effusion has been feeding a lava flow that had reached 2 km length into the Las Lajas ravine (SE side). ... [mehr]

After its latest paroxysm a few days ago, activity of the volcano has returned to normal levels with intermittent (one every few hours) weak to moderate-sized strombolian explosions. [mehr]
