Vulkannachrichten: Fuego Volcano (Guatemala)

Fuego volcano (Guatemala): 15th paroxysmal eruption in 2015 ended, volcano back to intermittent explosions

Montag Nov 28, 2016 15:27 | VON: T

Heat signal from Fuego volcano showing the rythmic pattern of so far 15 paroxysms in 2016 (MIROVA)
Heat signal from Fuego volcano showing the rythmic pattern of so far 15 paroxysms in 2016 (MIROVA)
Fuego volcano in calm yesterday (INSIVUMEH)
Fuego volcano in calm yesterday (INSIVUMEH)
The volcano follows its remarkable cycle of paroxysms (intense eruptive phase with lava fountains and rapid lava flow effusion) at regular intervals of approx. 3-4 weeks.
The latest, 15th paroxysm of 2016 so far, has ended a few days ago and the volcano is now in its relatively calm phase in between, characterized by intermittent small to moderate strombolian explosions.
The past paroxysm was relatively vigorous compared to most other similar events- in other words, its effusion rate was quite high compared. It produced a strong lava fountain that rose to at least 300 m during the peak activity and several lava flows on the eastern, southern and western flanks that reached up to approx. 3000 m length.
Partial collapses of the quickly deposited lava on the upper steep flanks also triggered a number of pyroclastic flows. Moderate ash fall affected the "usual" areas to the southwest including Morelia, Santa Sofía and Panimache, but there were no reports of serious damage or injuries.
