Hakone volcano (Japan): small explosion on 29 June, seismic crisis

Following a small explosion in the Owakudani hydrothermal area and increased seismic activity, the alert level of the volcano was raised to 3 (on a scale of 1-5) on 30 June.
A seismic crisis occurred on 29 June starting at 7:36 am (local time). Most tremors were small, but almost 140 quakes occurred within less than half an hour.
Cloud cover prevented direct observations, but a fine ash deposit was detected afterwards on the parking area near Owakudani, indicating that a small explosion had occurred, probably phreatic in origin.
Deformation of the Owakudani valley had reached more than 30 cm uplift since October 2014.
