Kilauea volcano (Hawai'i) activity update: lava flows advance on pali, active lava lakes in Pu'u 'O'o and Halemau'uma'u

Monday Oct 01, 2012 10:05 AM | VON: T

Despite the continuing inflation and deflation episodes on Kilauea, the lava flows increased their advance down the pali. One front entered the remaining kipuka within the Royal Gardens subdivision.
The flows are easily visible from the County Viewing Area located to the east in Kalapana and are becoming more into view from the west side of the flow field at the end of Chain of Craters Road.
At Pu`u `O`o, lava circulated in the east pit. Glowing spots were seen in the west edge of the north pit; lava flows continued to advance and spread southeast of Pu`u `O`o down the pali. Seismic tremor levels were low. Gas emissions were elevated.
The summit lava lake is deep within a ~160 m (520 ft) diameter cylindrical vent with nearly vertical sides inset within the east wall and floor of Halema`uma`u Crater. Its level fluctuates from about 60 m to more than 150 m (out of sight) below the floor of Halema`uma`u Crater. (HVO)

During 12-18 September HVO reported that the circulating lava lake periodically rose and fell in the deep pit within Kilauea's Halema'uma'u Crater. The gas plume from the vent continued to deposit variable amounts of spatter and Pele's hair, and possible crater wall veneer, onto nearby areas. ... [mehr]

Major deflation of the volcano's plumbing system has brought a temporary pause to active lava flows on the coastal plain, with lava flows already active above the hillside and heading downhill. [mehr]

During 28 August-4 September HVO reported that the circulating lava lake periodically rose and fell in the deep pit within Kilauea's Halema'uma'u Crater. The gas plume from the vent continued to deposit variable amounts of spatter and Pele's hair onto nearby areas. On 28 August two major collapses of the inner wall significantly disrupted the lake's circulation. ... [mehr]
