It was reported that during 12-18 November lava flowed SE through a tube system from underneath Kilauea's Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB). It was reaching the Waikupanaha ocean entry. Incandescence and active surface flows were seen at the base of the pali fault. Several earthquakes were located beneath the south of the caldera and along the S-flank fault. Beneath Halema'uma'u crater earthquakes ranged from 20 to 40, but could not be located. The vent in Halema'uma'u crater continued to produce a white plume and drifted mainly SW depositing small amounts of tephra. Night-time incandescence was seen at the base of a plume. Sounds resembling distant surf and rockfalls were reported in the vicinity of the crater. The sulfur dioxide emission rate was 800-1200 t per day on 14 and 17 November.

On 22-28 October lava flowded through a tube system at Kilauea´s Thanksgiving Eve Breakaout and was reaching the Waikupanaha ocean entry. On October 23 a plume was observed near the ocean entry. Acid rain caused a closure of the area for public also on 25 October.

It was reported that during 3-9 September, lava flowed SE through a lava tube system from underneath Kilauea's Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB) and rootless shield complex, reaching the Waikupanaha ocean entry and one further to the E. On 5 September, geologists saw multiple surface flows during an aerial observation: four on the coastal plain, and a large 'a'a flow and a small pahoehoe flow in the abandoned Royal Gardens subdivision.

After several weeks of elevated explosive activity at the summit of Kilauea volcano, the Halema'uma'u vent which opened on March 19 has doubled in size to a current diameter of 65 m (215 ft), allowing scientists hovering above on September 9 the first views of a now-exposed lava lake about 100 m (330 ft) below the vent rim. The lava lake, estimated to be 50 m (160 ft) in diameter, was seen to be roiling, bubbling, and overturning, with its surface level rising and falling as a result of gas pistoning, periodic bursts that release coalescing gas bubbles from beneath the lake's frozen crust in an explosion of lava rock and spatter. ...mehr [alles lesen]

HVO reported that during 13-19 August, lava flowed SE through a lava tube system from underneath Kilauea's Thanksgiving Eve Breakout (TEB) and rootless shield complex to the Waikupanaha ocean entry. Earthquakes were in various locations along the Koa'e fault system, S and W of the caldera, beneath the summit, along the S-flank faults, and along the E and SW rift zones. The vent in Halema'uma'u crater continued to produce a predominantly white plume with minor ash content that drifted mainly SW.

Glow from the Halemaumau vent (17 April, 2008)
Kilauea continues to be active at two locations: At the summit, ash elevated sulfur dioxide emissions continue from the Halema`uma`u vent, accompanied by elevated levels of seismic tremor. At the east rift eruption site, lava is flowing through lava tubes and entering the ocean at the Waikupanaha entries.
Do, 3 Apr 2008, 16:27
There are no significant changes at Kilauea volcano, which is active from two locations: at the summit, the new vent in Halema`uma`u crater continues to erupt ash and emit elevated lamounts of sulfur dioxide, accompanied by higher levels of volcanic tremor. At the coast, lava continues to flow into the ocean at the Waikupanaha and Ki ocean entries.

The ash plume from the new Halemau'uma'u vent.
The new gas vent at Halema`uma`u crater has erupted lava the evening of Easter Sunday into early Easter Monday. The amount of lava erupted from the vent last night was small, but it represents the first lava erupted from anywhere in Halema`uma`u since 1982. Previous eruptions included lava flowing into the crater from fissure eruptions on its southwest rim in 1974 and 1971 and an 8 month eruption in Halema`uma`u in 1967-1968 that created a lake of lava that covered the entire crater floor. ...mehr

On March 19, 2008, a small explosion occurred at Halema'uma'u Crater at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano. This is the first explosive event at the summit of Kilauea after almost a century. ...mehr
