Sehr explosiv. Große, Plinianische Eruptionen finden alle paar Tausend Jahre statt (die letzten großen Ausbrüche fanden vor 1000-2000 Jahren statt). Teilweise gab es Hangabrutsche. Es gibt die Bildung von Staukuppen (Lavadomen), die zum Abbrechen neigen und pyroklastische Lawinen erzeugen.

Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia): strong explosion this morning, 5 km ash column

A moderately strong explosive eruption occurred this morning at the volcano. At 10:56 local time (WIB), an explosion produced an ash column that rose approx. 5 km above the summit crater and drifted in SW direction. The aviation color code was raised to RED.
According to the volcano observatory, the eruption lasted 7 minutes and produced pyroclastic flows that traveled 2 km to the south-southeastern sector. Ash fall occurred in up to 20 km distance, especially in the Western sector where it reached the Mungkid sub-district of Magelang Regency. Ash fall was also reported in the Banyubiru Village area, Dukun District, Magelang Regency at about 15 km distance from the peak of Mount Merapi.
The eruption was not preceded by a clear precursor. Seismicity on the preceding day (26 Mar) only consisted of 3 volcanic earthquakes. Likewise, deformation did not show significant changes. This type of eruption can thus occur with little to no warning, but is also an indication that the (currently slow) supply of magma into the volcanic edifice is still ongoing. The volume of the lava dome was last estimated as 291.000 m3 on 19 Feb, based on aerial surveys by drone.
Communities near the volcano are advised to remain calm, continue activities as usual, but not approach the summit of Merapi within a 3 km radius.

PVMBG reported that the volume of the volcano’s summit lava dome decreased after the 13 February eruption that generated an ash plume which reached approx. 26,561 ft (2,000 m) altitude.
