Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia), eruption warning: increased seismicity and inflation

Donnerstag Sep 30, 2010 06:46 |
Merapi volcano near Central Java's capital Yogyakarta might be entering in a new phase of activity. The latest SI/USGS translates the following information from the Volcanological Survey of Indonesia:
CVGHM reported that a pattern of increasing seismicity from Merapi began in
to emerge in early September. Observers at Babadan (7 km W) and Kaliurang (8
km S) heard an avalanche on 12 September. On 13 September white plumes rose
800 m above the crater. Inflation, detected since March, increased from
background levels of 0.1 to 0.3 mm per day to a rate of 11 mm per day on 16
September. On 19 September earthquakes continued to be numerous, and the
next day CVGHM raised the Alert Level to 2 (on a scale of 1-4).

Glowing rockfalls at Merapi volcano at night (Aug. 2006)
Merapi volcano continues to be active, although the rate of the lava dome growth has been slowing down. During our ongoing tour, we visited the volcano on several occasions and observed a number of glowing rock avalanches to the SE side, travelling to a maximum of about 1 km from the summit. No pyroclastic flows were observed. ... alles lesen

During 19-25 July, lava flow / rock-fall activity at Merapi continued with incanescent rockfalls reaching maximum distances of 1.5 km SE toward the Gendol River. Pyroclastic flows were not observed during the reporting period. The Alert Level remained at 3 (on a scale of 1-4). alles lesen
Mittwoch, Jul 12, 2006
Merapi's activity has been gradually decreasing over the past two weeks. Pyroclastic flows into the Krasak and Gendol ravines have been becoming less frequent and rarely exceed 1 km in length. The lava dome is still glowing at night and produces incandescent rock-falls. Ash falls over the the past months have destroyed more than 3000 hectares of cultivated land (rice-fields, sweet-potato plantations and other crops), mostly in the Magelang, Boyolali and Klaten districts. alles lesen

The eruption of Merapi is increasing in intensity and has claimed the first deaths: Two people were killed on Wednesday 14 June, 2006, by a particularly strong pyroclastic flow that reached the area, travelling almost 7 km from the summit. The two men managed to run into a shelter at the village of Kaliadem, east of Kinahrejo near Bebeng, on the SE flank of the volcano, but were trapped inside because flow covered the shelter with about 2 meters of hot deposits. Although they survived for a while, the heat of the deposits effectively baked them to death. Recue workers tried for over 24 hours to free them, interrupted only when new pyroclastic flows were theatening to reach the area again. When the shelter was dug out free, they could only find the dead bodies. The flow also damaged some buildings, which is the first time, the eruption affected structures and villages as well. ... alles lesen
