Sehr explosiv. Große, Plinianische Eruptionen finden alle paar Tausend Jahre statt (die letzten großen Ausbrüche fanden vor 1000-2000 Jahren statt). Teilweise gab es Hangabrutsche. Es gibt die Bildung von Staukuppen (Lavadomen), die zum Abbrechen neigen und pyroklastische Lawinen erzeugen.

Merapi volcano (Central Java, Indonesia), update: strong ash explosions & pyroclastic flows, ash to 39,000 ft extending >200km W

Violent explosions and pyroclastic flows continue at Merapi. According to news, 6 more people were killed in the eruption, bringing the death toll from the current eruption to at least 44 so far. The Darwin VAAC reports the ash plume reaching 39,000 ft (ca. 13 km) altitude extending 200 km to the west.
Flight routes in the region are being diverted to avoid the ash plume. The airports of Yogya and Solo remain closed.

The eruption of Merapi volcano seems to have produced its strongest explosion so far today this afternoon around 16-17h local time. Strong ash exlosions and the growth of the lava dome continue at Merapi volcano. Yesterday and today, several medium-sized pyroclastic flows reached up to 4 km distance into the river canyons of Kali Gendol, Lamat, Senowo, and Krasak. Several thousands of inhabitants not yet evacuated are reported to have fled the area in panic. Two persons dies in a related road accident. [mehr]

Andy reports directly from the observatory Babadan, + 1279 m on the western slope, still mostly free of ash: "I witnessed 2 times pyroclastic flows since at 05.00 through Senowo river. Again last night 29 oct, around at 24.00 there was a massive glowing ash column rising up until 1,5 km, and all people at 5 at the distance 10 km from the summit must evacuated. ... [mehr]
