Soufriere Hills volcano (Montserrat, West Indies (UK)) activity update: incandescent spots at lava dome

During 4-11 May activity at the Soufrière Hills lava dome was at a low level.
Multiple areas of incandescence on the lava dome, at temperatures greater that 500 degrees Celsius, were visible on 5 May.
Heavy rains on 10 May generated a small lahar in the Belham Valley (NW).

MVO reported that the cloud cover which often obscures views of the Soufrière Hills lava dome cleared for a short period on 5 May, revealing multiple areas of incandescence, the same ones first observed on 11 November 2011. Some of the areas were visible to the naked eye while more were visible in a long-exposure photograph. ... [mehr]

The Montserrat Volcano Observatory reports that a new vent has been observed in the location where ash venting occurred on 23 March 2012. The vent is located in the floor of the 11 February 2010 collapse scar, immediately south of the remnants of the old English’s Crater wall and southwest of the long-lived hottest fumarole previously identified. It is estimated that the vent is between 30 and 50 m across. ... [mehr]
