Nevado del Ruiz volcano (Colombia): sporadic ash emissions, activity summary May 2016

Montag Jun 06, 2016 14:43 | VON: T

Ash emission from Nevado del Ruiz yesterday (Azufrado webcam)
Ash emission from Nevado del Ruiz yesterday (Azufrado webcam)
Sporadic mild explosions continue to occur from time to time, generating small ash plumes. Overall, the volcano's activity has decreased during the past weeks, but it remains in an unstable state. It is impossible to predict how the activity will evolve (could calm down further or increase) in the near to medium future.
SGC maintains alert level III (yellow) on its scale from IV (green) to I (red).

May 2016 activity summary, abbreviated after the recent monthly activity report from the Manizales volcano observatory of Nevado del Ruiz:
SGC (Colombia's Geological Survey) reported that during the month of May, the volcano continued be unstable, producing seismic activity associated with rock fracturing and fluid movements (gasses, water, magma) inside the volcanic edifice, but that activity has been significantly lower than during the previous month.
The largest recorded earthquake during May was a 2.6 magnitude event on 23 May at 18:57 (local time), originating NE of the Arenas summit crater at a depth 3.5 km. It was noted that weak, so-called "drumbeat" seismic swarms were seen occurring on 06, 07, 09, 13, 27 and 30 May. These signals lasted between 13-40 seconds and were of low energy. It is thought they are being generated by rhythmic oscillations of magma inside the conduits.
Seismic activity related to fluid dynamics within fractures and volcanic conduits was dominated by periods of continuous volcanic tremor, and earthquakes low and very low frequency (LP and VLP), located mainly beneath the Arenas crater, its surroundings and the Southeastern sector of the volcano.
Several of these signals were associated with the observed ash emissions.
Satellite-based data showed thermal anomalies at the Arenas crater, which also had decreased since April. Degassing remains intense, with significant amounts of sulfur dioxide (SO2) released. The degassing plume reached up to 2500 m height in May.
Deformation showed "some changes" (no details given). Other geophysical and -chemical parameters monitored showed no significant variations.
