Nevados de Ruiz volcano (Colombia): new ash eruptions

Dienstag Jun 28, 2016 18:46 | VON: T

Ash emission from Nevado del Ruiz this morning
Ash emission from Nevado del Ruiz this morning
The volcano produced again several small to moderately-sized ash eruptions during yesterday and today, generating plumes that rose up to approx. 1 km above the crater.
The most significant emissions occurred occurred yesterday morning at 08:22 and today at 07:48 local time and were accompanied by a strong tremor signals.
Time-lapse video of the activity since yesterday dawn:

A priori it is assumed that these explosions were the result of shallow explosions in the unstable hydrothermal system of the volcano and involve no fresh magma, although a shallow underlying magma body is likely indirectly the cause by providing the heat.
A precursor might have been a volcano-tectonic earthquake of magnitude 3 that occurred at shallow depth (3.5 km) beneath the Arenas crater on 22 June, possibly caused by increased magma pressure inside the volcano's upper storage system.
SGC (Colombia's National Geologic Survey) keeps the alert level of Nevado del Ruiz unchanged at (only) III (yellow) on the Colombian scale ranging from IV (green, lowest) to I (red, highest).

Ash emission from Nevado del Ruiz yesterday (Azufrado webcam)
Montag, Jun 06, 2016
Sporadic mild explosions continue to occur from time to time, generating small ash plumes. Overall, the volcano's activity has decreased during the past weeks, but it remains in an unstable state. It is impossible to predict how the activity will evolve (could calm down further or increase) in the near to medium future. ... [mehr]
