Nishino-shima volcano (Japan): eruption still continuing

12:05 PM | VON: TThe Japan Coast Guard noted that the island had grown to about 2.46 square kilometers and the active cone was about 100 m tall. Explosions occurred several times per minute and ash-and-gas plumes rose 1.2 km. Steam plumes rose from areas where lava flows contacted sea water.

Nishino-shima volcano (Japan): active lava flows towards the eastern shore
The island continues to grow with lava flows, which recently have been mostly active towards the east from the main vent, while most growth during Nov-Dec had been towards the north, where a vast plateau has been built. Read all
