A graph of a seismic development at Piton de la Fournaise volcano since early August with increased numbers of earthquakes involved (image: OVPF)
20 volcano-tectonic earthquakes were detected on 28 August, 24 quakes on 29 August and 41 quakes on 30 August. These low-magnitude (less than M 1) earthquakes were located at depths between 1.5 and 2.5 km.
The elevated seismic activity followed a pattern of continuous inflation, that has lasted more than 7 months, at the top and base of the edifice. Its distribution is likely compatible with a center of pressure within a magma reservoir at about 1.5-2 km depth.
