CENAPRED reported emissions of steam and gas from Popocatépetl during
15-21 October. The plumes occasionally contained slight amounts of ash
on 20 and 21 October.

CENAPRED reported that emissions of steam and gas from Popocatépetl were visible during 12-19 February. The plumes contained slight amounts of ash from explosions in the crater.

Gas and steam emissions were reportet from Popocatépetl during 30 January - 5 February and after strong explosions rocks were propelled 300 m from the crater and rolling down in the valleys.

Popocatepetl greeted the new year with one of its more powerful explosions. The ash plume from the eruption reached about 8 km height, which makes it one of the biggest during its recent period of activity started in 1994, which has been characterized by more or less frequent, isolated ash explosions of small to moderate size.

In the recent days, Popocatepetl has been more active than usual. On 1 December, a larger explosion occurred and produced ash plume that rose to an altitude of 7.4 km (24,300 ft) a.s.l. and drifted N and then NE. Ashfall was reported in areas downwind. Based satellite observations from the Washington VAAC, the ash plume rose to an altitude of 9.1 km (30,000 ft) a.s.l.
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
