Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update
Sonntag Dez 30, 2012 11:05 | VON: T
Small explosion during the night 28-29 Dec
The rate of small explosions and steam-ash emissions remains at moderate levels with 1-2 events per hour (39 during 28-29 Dec). Glow remains visible at night.
Freitag, Dez 28, 2012
The number of gas, steam and sometimes ash emissions has dropped to only about 1-2 per hour, but otherwise, the volcano's activity remains unchanged.
Mittwoch, Dez 26, 2012
During 24-25 Dec, the number of emission (72) has risen again to about 3 per hour, and some of them were moderate in size and produced small ash plumes. ...
Montag, Dez 24, 2012
In the last 24 hours during 22-23 Dec, the number of emissions was 45, about 2 per hour, with several ones being comparably larger than during most of the past weeks. Ash emissions occurred yesterday at 17:17 h reaching a height of about 1 km above the crater of the volcano and drifting towards the northeast, another one at 17:42 h with a height of 2.5 km, and a third one at 17:49 h. ...
Freitag, Dez 21, 2012
77 exhalations of low to moderate intensity occurred during 20-21 Dec, accompanied by emissions of steam and gas, and in some cases small amounts of ash. The most important was occurred today at 08:43 h and produced a column of gas and ash that rose 2 km above the crater and was also alerted of by VAAC Washington.
Donnerstag, Dez 20, 2012
After increasing to 5 weak steam and sometimes ash emissions per hour during 17-18 Dec, the rate has dropped to about 3 per hour during 18-19 Dec. Glow remains visible at night.
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
