Popocatépetl volcano (Mexico): strong explosions and ongoing ash emissions
Freitag Mai 24, 2013 13:38 | VON: T
Powerful explosion yesterday at 02:54 local time (CENAPRED webcam)
Current seismic recording from Popocatépetl - showing the teleseismic waves from the M8.3 earthquake in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Activity, both internal and external, remains elevated. A constant steam plume can be seen rising on webcams and a steam-gas-ash plume rises up to about 1.5 km above the volcano. The seismic signal shows frequent earthquakes and emission events.
Yesterday, the volcano has been very active and produced frequent explosions and near-continuous steam-gas-ash emissions accompanied by phases of volcanic tremor. At 02:54 h local time, an explosion occurred, which sent huge fragments at distances of up to 1.5 km from the crater (image). After this event, activity continued unabated.
A volcanic earthquake of magnitude 2.3 occurred at 12:08 h local time.
The strong signal on the seismogram are the teleseismic waves from the M8.3 earthquake in the Sea of Okhotsk.
Alert level remains at Yellow phase 3.

Activity has been showing an increase today. Yesterday, CENPRED reported near-continuous emissions of steam and gas and sometimes ash. Some larger explosions occurred at 12:13 h and at 12:34 h local time yesterday. Both produced an eruption column about 1.3 km high and drifting west. Bright glow and strong steaming are currently visible from the webcam images. ...

Activity has been a bit calmer over the past 2 days, but the number of emissions and small explosions (about 3 per hour) remains elevated. Explosions ejected incandescent fragments to heights of 500 m above the crater. Strong glow is visible at the volcano's summit at night. Intermittent phases of volcanic tremor and volcanic earthquakes of magnitude up to 2.1 have been registered. The volcanic alert level remains at YELLOW Phase 3.

Activity remains elevated, but the number and size of explosions have decreased during the past 2 days. CENAPRED made an overflight and found that the series of recent explosions since 14 May, in particular the two that occurred on the night of the 16th to 17th, have excavated a crater of approx. 200 m diameter and 40 m depth in the lava dome. The rest of the dome's surface is covered by fragments from the explosions.
Freitag, Mai 17, 2013
Activity remains intense. Last night at 22:14 and this morning at 00:29 h local time, two strong explosions occurred and ejected incandescent fragments on all the volcano´s flanks to distances of up to 1,500 m from the crater. The explosions triggered an eruption plume rising at least 3 km above the volcano, drifting northeast.
Donnerstag, Mai 16, 2013
Activity remains elevated and ash plumes from frequent explosions of moderate size reach 26,000 ft (8 km) altitude, drifting NE. Ash fall occurred in Paso de Cortés, north of the volcano. ...
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
