Dienstag, Mai 28, 2013
An explosion early today at 05:03 h (local time) ejected incandescent fragments to 1.5 km distance from the crater on the northeastern slope and generated a column of ash that reached more than 2 km height above the crater and was dispersed to the SW. ... [mehr]
Montag, Mai 27, 2013
The volcano's activity has been reduced compared to a week ago, but still produces occasional explosions with plumes of up to 2 km in height, and many smaller emissions, accompanied by low-level harmonic tremor and a continuous steam plume rising about 1 km. ... [mehr]
SO2 plume from Popocatépetl (NOAA)
Samstag, Mai 25, 2013
Activity has not changed much, but perhaps decreased a bit today. During the last 24 h, CENAPRED recorded 3 explosions of moderate intensity, yesterday at 15:40 h, this early morning at 06:46 h and at 10:00 h (local time). All of them were accompanied by a column of gas and ash of 1.5, 1 and 2 km height, respectively. ... [mehr]
Powerful explosion yesterday at 02:54 local time (CENAPRED webcam)
Freitag, Mai 24, 2013
Activity, both internal and external, remains elevated. A constant steam plume can be seen rising on webcams and a steam-gas-ash plume rises up to about 1.5 km above the volcano. The seismic signal shows frequent earthquakes and emission events. ... [mehr]

Donnerstag, Mai 23, 2013
Activity has been showing an increase today. Yesterday, CENPRED reported near-continuous emissions of steam and gas and sometimes ash. Some larger explosions occurred at 12:13 h and at 12:34 h local time yesterday. Both produced an eruption column about 1.3 km high and drifting west. Bright glow and strong steaming are currently visible from the webcam images. ... [mehr]

Background:

Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano.  The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater.  The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano.  The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone.  Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano.  Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
