Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update
Dienstag Jun 04, 2013 07:46 | VON: T
Ash emission from Popocatépel yesterday
Activity has been reduced during the past days. Occasional explosions produced steam and ash plumes rising about 1 km above the crater and the frequency of small emissions has been about 3 per hour.
Most of the time, the summit of the volcano has been in clouds, but occasionally, a weak steam and ash plume, as well incandescence at night could be observed. CENAPRED maintains alert level "Yellow Phase 3".
Freitag, Mai 31, 2013
Activity has continued to decrease and there have been no new significant explosions. The number of steam-gas emissions (which sometimes contain also small amounts of ash) has dropped from an average of 5 per hour to only 2 per hour last night.
Donnerstag, Mai 30, 2013
An earthquake swarm and tremor pulses occurred today, which could suggest new magma on the rise, but this has (not yet) resulted in particular surface activity which remained rather calm. Degassing (SO2 emissions) remains strong.
Mittwoch, Mai 29, 2013
Since yesterday morning's explosion, the volcano has been relatively quiet and only produced about 1 weak emission of mostly steam per hour. ...
Dienstag, Mai 28, 2013
An explosion early today at 05:03 h (local time) ejected incandescent fragments to 1.5 km distance from the crater on the northeastern slope and generated a column of ash that reached more than 2 km height above the crater and was dispersed to the SW. ...
Montag, Mai 27, 2013
The volcano's activity has been reduced compared to a week ago, but still produces occasional explosions with plumes of up to 2 km in height, and many smaller emissions, accompanied by low-level harmonic tremor and a continuous steam plume rising about 1 km. ...
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
