SO2 plume from Popocatépetl (NOAA)
Current webcam view of Popocatépetl
Current seismic recording from Popocatépetl
The rate of emissions has dropped to less than 1 per hour, but more (small) earthquakes have occurred and a large SO2 plume is visible yesterday on satellite images, suggesting that new magma could be currently intruding at depth.
Weak glow is visible from the crater at night.
Mittwoch, Jun 12, 2013
A cluster of several (7) volcanic earthquakes up to magnitudes 2.4 has occurred this morning, perhaps heralding some more vigorous activity in he near future. ... [mehr]
Samstag, Jun 08, 2013
Given the currently low activity (1-3 weak steam and gas emissions per hour), CENAPRED has lowered the alert level back to "Yellow Phase 2". [mehr]
Freitag, Jun 07, 2013
Activity has not changed much and remained comparably low, with about 3 weak to moderate emissions of steam and gas per hour. Occasionally, some of them contained small amounts of ash. ... [mehr]
Dienstag, Jun 04, 2013
Activity has been reduced during the past days. Occasional explosions produced steam and ash plumes rising about 1 km above the crater and the frequency of small emissions has been about 3 per hour. ... [mehr]
Freitag, Mai 31, 2013
Activity has continued to decrease and there have been no new significant explosions. The number of steam-gas emissions (which sometimes contain also small amounts of ash) has dropped from an average of 5 per hour to only 2 per hour last night. [mehr]
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
