Popocatepetl volcano news & eruption update

Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update

Dienstag Okt 15, 2013 14:32 | VON: T

Eruption from Popocatépetl yesterday night
Eruption from Popocatépetl yesterday night
No significant change in activity occurred, although a slightly increasing trend is visible in the past days. Emissions were at rates of 3 per hour on average yesterday. CENAPRED also recorded 10 explosions with ash plumes up to 1.5 km height. Some of them ejected incandescent material up to 300 m outside the crater on the northern slope. Alert status remains at Yellow Phase 2.
Vorherige Nachrichten
Montag, Okt 14, 2013
The number of emissions (mainly steam puffs) has increased to about 3 per hour. A total of 8 small explosions, some of which ejected incandescent tephra outside the crater and produced small ash plumes were observed during the latest 24 hour report interval (CENAPRED). ... [mehr]
Sonntag, Okt 13, 2013
No changes have occurred. The volcano produces 1-2 generally weak emissions of steam and sometimes ash on average per hour. [mehr]
Small eruption from Popocatépetl yesterday
Donnerstag, Okt 10, 2013
The number of emissions has increased to about 2 per hour, and several smaller explosions occurred during the past days, generating ash plumes reaching up to about 1 km above the crater. [mehr]
Crater glow and steam plume from Popocatépel early this morning
Samstag, Okt 05, 2013
No changes in the currently low activity have occurred. Moderate steaming, occasional weak ash venting / small explosions (at rates of approx once / 2 hours) and glow at the summit at night characterize the current phase. CENPARED's alert level remains "Yellow Phase 2". [mehr]
Crater glow from Popocatépel this morning
Donnerstag, Okt 03, 2013
Activity has remained low with only weak emissions at averages of 1 every 1-2 hours. Occasionally, some ash explosions still occur, with plumes up to about 1 km height. Crater glow can still be seen at night and SO2 emission is strong, two indicators that magma continues to arrive at the summit (although at reduced rate). [mehr]

Background:

Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano.  The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater.  The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano.  The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone.  Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano.  Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
