Popocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity update
Donnerstag Nov 14, 2013 13:58 | VON: T
Activity has remained stable at low levels. CENAPRED reported 61 weak emissions of mostly steam, gas and only occasionally minor amounts of ash during the 24 hour observation interval between 12-13 Nov.
Sonntag, Nov 03, 2013
No significant change in activity have occurred recently. The volcano produces frequent (on average 3 per hour) steam and sometimes small ash emissions / explosions and continues to show weak crater glow at night.
Dienstag, Okt 22, 2013
Activity remains very weak. Only 5-10 emissions of steam and gas were recorded per day recently.
Dienstag, Okt 22, 2013
No significant changes in (the currently weak) activity occurred. CENAPRED only recorded 5 weak emissions during 19-20 Oct.
Freitag, Okt 18, 2013
Following a small increase in the frequency of small explosive emissions during the previous days, activity has now decreased again to averages of less than 1 emission per hour. At night, crater glow remains visible.
Dienstag, Okt 15, 2013
No significant change in activity occurred, although a slightly increasing trend is visible in the past days. Emissions were at rates of 3 per hour on average yesterday. CENAPRED also recorded 10 explosions with ash plumes up to 1.5 km height. Some of them ejected incandescent material up to 300 m outside the crater on the northern slope. Alert status remains at Yellow Phase 2.
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
