Popocatepetl volcano news & eruption updatePopocatépetl volcano (Central Mexico) activity updateMo, 4. Aug 2014, 16:21 16:21 PM | VON: T Small ash puff at Popocatépetl yesterday (CENAPRED)
Activity at the volcano remains low with little variation. Occasional small explosions with ash emissions and near-constant degassing, as well as weak glow at the summit at night characterize the current status of the volcano. CENAPRED keeps the alert level unchanged at "Yellow Phase 2". Vorherige NachrichtenNo significant changes in the currently low activity at the volcano have occurred recently. alles lesenNo significant changes in activity have occurred over the past weeks. Following a very quiet period, the volcano has become a bit more active in the past days with an increased number of steam and gas emissions. alles lesenA moderate explosion occurred yesterday morning at 11:10 local time and generated a 2.5 km high ash column drifting NW. Overall, the activity at the volcano has been low during the past weeks. The alert status remains at Yellow Phase 2 (CENAPRED). ... alles lesenThe number of emissions of steam, gas and occasionally fine ash increased during 1-2 June. CENAPRED also recorded several episodes of weak harmonic tremor, consistent with continuing slow arrival of magma at the summit crater. alles lesenThe number of steam-gas and sometimes ash emissions has increased a bit to approx 8 per hour. No other significant changes occurred at the volcano. ... alles lesenBackground:Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano. At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.
