Popocatépetl volcano (Mexico): growing lava dome has filled inner crater
Freitag Jan 29, 2016 19:08 | VON: T
Popocatépetl's active dome filling the inner crater as seen on 27 Jan 2016 (image: CENAPRED)
Small ash explosion yesterday
The volcano's lava dome has filled the inner crater, CENAPRED observed during an overflight on 27 January. The high level of the dome explains the relatively strong glow visible at night.
According to CENAPRED, it is likely that small to moderate explosions in the coming days will destroy the dome again (as happened numerous times in the past during the current eruptive cycle of Popo).
During the past few days, activity has been at average to low levels with 2-5 small explosions that generated ash plumes dispersing into easterly directions.

No significant changes have occurred during the past weeks at the volcano. Magma is slowly rising and growing a flat dome in the inner summit crater. Trapped, pressurized gasses cause small to moderate explosions with more or less intense ash emissions from time to time, typically a few per day: ... [mehr]

During 30 September-6 October the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 23-142 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ... [mehr]

CENAPRED reported that during 16-22 September the seismic network at Popocatépetl recorded 15-89 daily emissions consisting of water vapor, gas, and sometimes ash; cloud cover often prevented visual observations. ...
Dienstag, Aug 18, 2015
Activity at the volcano, relatively low at the moment, has remained more or less unchanged. Lava is slowly being extruded in the inner summit crater and occasionally produces small explosions and less vigorous degassing events ("exhalations"). ... [mehr]

The activity at the volcano has remained more or less unchanged over the past months. During the past days, explosive activity has been a bit higher than average, but alert level remains unchanged at Yelled phase 2. ... [mehr]
Volcán Popocatépetl, whose name is the Aztec word for smoking mountain, towers to 5426 m 70 km SE of Mexico City to form North America's 2nd-highest volcano. The glacier-clad stratovolcano contains a steep-walled, 250-450 m deep crater. The generally symmetrical volcano is modified by the sharp-peaked Ventorrillo on the NW, a remnant of an earlier volcano.
At least three previous major cones were destroyed by gravitational failure during the Pleistocene, producing massive debris-avalanche deposits covering broad areas south of the volcano. The modern volcano was constructed to the south of the late-Pleistocene to Holocene El Fraile cone. Three major plinian eruptions, the most recent of which took place about 800 AD, have occurred from Popocatépetl since the mid Holocene, accompanied by pyroclastic flows and voluminous lahars that swept basins below the volcano. Frequent historical eruptions, first recorded in Aztec codices, have occurred since precolumbian time.

Raung volcano photos
: One of the largest and most active volcanoes in East Java, rarely-visited and relatively unknown Raung became (in)famous during its recent eruption in 2015 when its frequent ash plumes forced the repeated closure of Bali's airport.
Volcanic crisis at Sakurajima - updates
: A strong earthquake swarm and increased inflation were detected in August 2015 and triggered authorities to raise the alert level, as volcanologists think that a larger eruption could follow. News and updates on the events can be found on this page.
