Sarychev volcano erupted violently starting 11 June 2009 until mid-end of June, producing a series of sub-plinian eruptions sending large gas and ash plumes to 10-14 km elevation, which drifted westward across the northern hemisphere. Based on analyses of satellite imagery, SVERT reported that on 22 July a gas-and-steam plume from Sarychev Peak drifted 35 km N. Cloud cover prevented observations during 23-26 July.
