Activity, weak during the past months, seems to have picked up. A new lava flow has started to slowly descend the southeastern slope.

Since the intense explosive phase of activity in February 2012, accompanied by pyroclastic flows down the southern slope, a lava dome has been growing slowly inside the breached summit crater. This dome now started to form a more or less coherent lava lobe that began descending through the notch onto the upper southern slope. Weak glow is visible at night.
As a comparison of satellite images between 7 June and 16 July, compiled by Culture Volcan shows the progression of a tongue of hot material inside the ravine, likely a lava flow reaching 1,5-2 km length.
The presence of this flow has been causing almost constant rockfalls from the front of the flow into the Kembar ravine.
Lava flows are not uncommon at Semeru. Other recent ones occurred in 2010 and in March 2012.

CVGHM reported that during 1-29 February multiple pyroclastic flows from Semeru traveled 500 and 2,500 m into the Besuk Kembar and Besuk Kobokan rivers (on the S flank), respectively. During 1 February-30 April dense gray-to-white plumes rose 100-500 m above Jongring Seloko crater and drifted W and N. Incandescence was visible up to 50 m above the crater during 1 February-31 March. Seismicity decreased from March to April. Observations indicated that the lava dome grew in April. On 2 May CVGHM lowered the Alert Level to 2 (on a scale of 1-4) and reminded the public not to approach the crater within a 4-km radius. alles lesen

Our expedition leader Doni just returned from a visit to Semeru and reports that on 27 March, he and our group observed frequent explosions every few minutes, with many powerful enough to eject glowing bombs to produce small glowing avalanches down on the southern flank of the volcano. ... alles lesen
