Shishaldin volcano (Alaska): increased activity

Monday Nov 24, 2014 11:13 AM | VON: T

Current seismic signal (SSLW station, AVO)
Current seismic signal (SSLW station, AVO)
A surge of activity was detected at the volcano. The Alaska Volcano Observatory writes:
"Seismic activity has increased over the past two hours and more sharply over the past 30 minutes, suggesting that the eruption at Shishaldin has intensified. Ash emissions beyond the immediate summit crater are more likely while seismic activity is increased. Satellite images from earlier tonight show elevated surface temperatures near the volcano's summit."
Vorherige Nachrichten
Friday, Oct 31, 2014
Eruptive activity at the volcano continues. Most of the time, it seems to be weak, probably strombolian in nature, but there have been episodes with more intense activity, possibly lava fountaining, evidenced by strong tremor and elevated surface temperatures. ... [mehr]

AVO reported that, although cloud cover often obscured views of Shishaldin during 15-21 October, seismicity indicated that a low-level eruption was likely continuing. ... [mehr]
Thursday, Oct 16, 2014
Low-level eruptive activity likely continues at the volcano, AVO writes: "Elevated surface temperatures were detected in satellite data from this morning. Sound waves coupling into the ground (ground-coupled air waves) from small explosions as well as small pulses of tremor are occasionally detected in seismic data." (AVO) [mehr]

AVO reported that, although cloud cover sometimes obscured views of Shishaldin during 17-22 September, seismicity indicated that a low-level eruption was possibly continuing. ... [mehr]
Shishaldin volcano's lava lake seen on 10 Aug (image: Cyrus Read / AVO)
Thursday, Aug 14, 2014
The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) released a photo showing a small active lava lake inside the volcano's crater. Previously available satellite imagery was only able to identify a heat source, but not the type of its source, i.e. the activity at the volcano. [mehr]
