Shishaldin volcano (Aleutian Islands, Alaska) activity update: Small lava lake deep in summit crater

Recent unrest (seismic tremor, thermal anomalies) has increased and a new, very minor eruption is underway. AVO field crews observed a small lava lake inside the deep funnel-shaped summit crater, but the activity has been contained within the crater so far. This is similar to the last eruption in 2014-15. The alert level has been raised to ORANGE/WATCH. A more substantial eruption is possible (like that of 1999) but there is no indication of this occurring so far.

The alert level of the volcano was lowered back to green, as there has been declining seismic and infrasound activity over the past month. According to the Alaska Volcano Observatory, "these observations represent a return to normal background activity at Shishaldin."
