Based on visual observations and analyses of satellite data, KVERT reported that during 13-20 September a viscous lava flow effused onto the N and NW flanks of Shiveluch's lava dome, accompanied by hot avalanches, incandescence, ash explosions, and fumarolic activity. A thermal anomaly was detected in satellite images during 15-16 September; clouds obscured views on the other days. Video data showed that at 1454 on 20 September an ash plume rose to altitudes of 5-5.5 km (16,400-18,000) a.s.l. and drifted 20 km NE.

Explosion from Shiveluch volcano this morning (KVERT webcam)
The volcano continues to slowly extrude a new lobe of viscous lava from the dome. This process is accompanied by occasional explosions and ash emissions such as one this morning that produced a plume rising to 19,000 ft (5.8 km) altitude.

Based on visual observations and analyses of satellite data, KVERT reported that during 6-13 September a viscous lava flow effused onto the N and NW flanks of Shiveluch's lava dome, accompanied by hot avalanches, incandescence, and fumarolic activity. A thermal anomaly was detected daily in satellite images. At 1128 on 12 September video data showed an ash plume that rose to altitudes of 5-5.5 km (16,400-18,000 ft) a.s.l. and drifted 30 km SE.

Small ash emission from Shiveluch volcano this morning (KVERT webcam)
KVERT reports no changes in activity, which is currently relatively low. Accompanied by moderate seismic activity, a viscous lava dome continues to grow and produces small incandescent rockfalls and occasional ash emissions such as on the attached webcam picture this morning. Glow can be seen at night.

The volcano has apparently entered a phase of elevated explosive activity. Over the past days, several explosions have occurred from the growing lava dome and produced ash plumes rising to up to about 23,000 ft (7 km) altitude. Small block avalanches and pyroclastic flows accompany the process as well.

The volcano has been increasingly active during the past days. This morning, an explosive eruption produced an ash plume rising to 21-22,000 ft (6.5-7 km) altitude which drifted ESE. The eruption lasted about 20 minutes, KVERT writes.
