A phase of intense activity occurred last night starting at 19:10 UTC, and lasting for about 40 minutes. The activity was probably a major collapse of the dome and/or accompanied by explosions. It produced a large ash plume rising to about 10-12 km altitude (VAAC Tokyo) into the atmosphere. Due to cloud cover, no direct observations could be made.
A dust veil of reddish ash (likely originating from older, altered lava, suggesting that the event was largely characterized by partial collapse of the existing dome) engulfed the villages of Lazo and Klyuchi SW of the volcano where a layer of 1 and 2 mm of ash was deposited.
The aviation color code was raised to RED and then again lowered to ORANGE.

An explosion occurred last night at 21:02 UTC lasting for 6.5 minutes and sending an ash plume to an estimated altitude of about 30,000 ft (7-8 km), KVERT reports. The eruption was not observed directly, but inferred from seismic data. [mehr]

A possible explosion or partial lava dome collapse produced a modest ash plume yesterday rising to 12,000 ft (3.7 km) altitude (VAAC Tokyo). KVERT reports no significant changes and continues to record moderate tremor levels, indicating that magma continues to rise and slowly build up the lava dome. [mehr]
