The local observatory PVMBG reported that a phreatic or hydrothermal eruption occurred at the volcano today.
The new eruption started at Sirung volcano at 16:44 local time as a white-grayish gas and ash plume rose approx. 6,600 ft (2,000 m) above the summit crater and drifted north.
An elevated volcanic tremor started to rise about 10 hours before the eruption and after decreased again to medium-low values. No rapid magma flux towards the surface has been recorded. Periods of amplitude tremor have not shown significant variations. The seismic network didn't recorded volcano-tectonic earthquake related to the eruption. The seismic activity continues at low levels over the past three months.
The alert level for the volcano was raised to Level 2.
The warning bulletin states that pyroclastic rocks, mud and volcanic gases (SO2, CO2, CO) at the summit area could affect an area of about 1.5 km distance from the main crater.
The phreatic/hydrothermal eruption came without warning even though the volcano had been in a low state of activity levels.
Volcanic gases likely reached the shallow hydrothermal system and triggered the eruption.

PVMBG reported that a phreatic eruption at Sirung was recorded at 1644 on 21 July. A white-and-gray ash plume rose 2 km above the summit and drifted N. The report noted that the event was preceded by an increase in tremor amplitude that lasted about 10 hours; no volcanic earthquakes indicating magma movement were recorded and tremor amplitude did not notably increase. ...
