The Volcano Adventure Guide: Excellent information and background for anyone wishing to visit active volcanoes safely and enjoyably. The book presents guidelines to visiting 42 different volcanoes around the world.
Climbing Stromboli volcano: Stromboli provides one of the most remarkable opportunities to watch volcanic eruptions from close: a natural ridge located 150 m above the active vents. A classic and all-time favorite tour by anyone interested in seeing active volcanoes!
Moderately strong explosion from Stromboli's northern vent in the eastern crater section on the evening of 22 Oct 2017
When observed yesterday evening during our ongoing tour to Italy's volcanoes, activity at the crater of the volcano was at low to moderate levels. Compared to June-July, the activity of the volcano had decreased a lot during the past months, but the configuration remained essentially the same. ...mehr
We observed 4 active vents: the westernmost vent with sporadic (30-40 mins interval) mild eruptions rich in ash and only few incandescent bombs, the central vent with constant glow showing pulsating degassing (but no visible spattering), and the two large vents of the eastern crater. Out of the latter, the northern one, forming a circular crater of approx. 20 m diameter, was the most active, with typical strombolian type eruptions every 5-20 minutes, reaching ejection heights of 50-100 m typically, but sometimes surpassing 150 m. The easternmost vent next to this one only erupted occasionally, at intervals of 20-60 minutes, ejecting incandescent scoria to 50-100 m. [less]
During the first part of June, activity at Stromboli volcano was one of the most intense periods during several years. At most times, up to 6 or 7 vents were active, most notably the two eastern vents, closely followed and sometimes surpassed by the two western vents. ...mehr
Moderate strombolian eruption from the main eastern vent (N2) of Stromboli on 16 June 2017
When observed yesterday, the activity of the volcano seemed to have decreased a bit compared to earlier in the week, although explosions continued to occur very frequently, at rates of one every few minutes, mainly from the eastern and western vents. ...mehr
During 16 June, 6 vents in total were found active (s. attached image and crater map of earlier update): two in the western crater area (left in picture, S1, S2), two adjacent vents (C) in the central (southern) part and the large cone-shaped vents (right in picture, N1, N2 with eruption) that compose the eastern crater. Most activity occurred from the eastern main vent N2, which had strombolian explosions of small to moderate size at intervals of 5-10 minutes, but with only rare ejections higher than 150 m. Ash-rich eruptions of varying size continued to occur from the easternmost vent (N1). [less]
Strong explosion from Stromboli's NW vent (S1) and a moderate one from the eastern (N2) vent on 11 June 2017 evening
The activity of the volcano remains at moderate to high levels. Compared to the update a few days ago, activity at the eastern vents (N1, N2) has decreased a bit, but instead increased significantly from the westernmost vent (S1). ...mehr
When observed last night, powerful strombolian explosions from this vent, often accompanied by loud detonations, often reached or even exceeded 200 m height, and occurred at intervals of 5-10 minutes. In total, only 4 of the 5 vents previously observed were active; the second vent (S2) in the western crater area was not observed yesterday. The central vent only had rare (every 1-2 hours) mild strombolian bursts, but showed frequent mild spattering and intense lava glow. [less]
Strombolian explosion from Stromboli's NE crater on evening of 30 May 2017 (image: Thierry Basset)
Activity at the volcano has increased over the past month and although still at levels considered within normal limited, can be described as elevated. It certainly is spectacular to view. ...mehr
Strombolian-type eruptions occur every few minutes and are strongest from the northeastern vent (N1 on the crater map) and the westernmost vent (S1), ejecting incandescent bombs and lapilli to more than 200 m height. At the moment, there are 4 principal active vents in the crater terrace, clustered into the area of the formerly called NE vents (N1 and N2) and the western (S1) and central craters (C). Near-constant mild spattering as well as occasional explosions have been occurring from the N2 vent, where the magma column seems to be standing particularly high and sometimes shows exploding magma bubbles.

Strong explosion from Stromboli's NE vent this morning (Il Vulcano a Piedi webcam from Bastimento)
The activity at Stromboli has recently increased a lot. During our ongoing tour to Stromboli and Etna, Marco Fulle reported that eruptions have been occurring at intervals of 5-10 minutes, most often from the two northeastern vents (towards the Stromboli village side), but also the central and western vents are active as the below time-lapse video shows. ...mehr
Many explosions were of moderately large size and ejected lava bombs higher than the observers' position on Pizzo, i.e. more than 200 m above the vents.

Intraplate volcanism: A third tectonic setting where volcanism occurs is believed to be the result of mantle plumes and not directly related to plate boundaries. So called hot spot volcanoes fall into this category.
Types of tours: We offer a broad variety of tours to volcanic areas: volcano expeditions and specials, discovery tours with hiking, photography, nature and culture, pilot tours and private custom tours.
