The activity at the volcano has slowly decreased overall during the past weeks and is now described as medium on the LGS activity scale.
When observed last evening (18 Oct) during the ongoing tour to Italy's volcanoes, we observed small to medium-sized strombolian activity mainly from the western and from the eastern vents:
The western vent continues to produce ash-rich explosions, with abundant glowing material reaching 80-150 m height and falling back onto the outer crater slopes, generating glowing avalanches that often reach the sea. Ash plumes typically rose 3-400 m and drifted over the eastern and southern part of the island, where an almost constant light ash fall could be noted. Intervals of explosions were about 4-8 minutes.
The eastern cluster of vents erupted less frequently, about every 20-30 minutes, generating small glowing fountains that reached 50-100 m height, and almost no ash.
Continuous glow suggests that other vents are emitting incandescent gas and/or displaying small lava spattering. Access to the summit area remains strictly closed.
