Taal volcano (Philippines): volcano is warming up, alert level raised

A seismic swarm has been detected under the volcano since 22 March, including more than 50 volcanic-tectonic earthquakes, which could indicate rock-fracturing beneath the volcanic edifice possibly associated with hydrothermal activity or magma movements at depth.
In addition, GPS measurements showed a slight inflation and the temperature of the lake has increased from 30.7 degrees to 31.7 degrees in tandem with an increase of magma-derived carbon dioxide emissions (one of the first indicators of new magma at depth).
These data do not mean that an eruption is likely to occur in the near future, but could be early warning signs if they are caused by magma intrusion at depth. They however suggest that the shallow hydrothermal system is currently in disequilibrium, which could lead to sudden steam explosions with little or no warning.
"The public is reminded that the Main Crater should be strictly off-limits because sudden steam explosions can occur and high concentrations of lethal volcanic gases can be released. The northern portion of the Main Crater rim, in the vicinity of Daang Kastila Trail, can also become hazardous when fumarolic or degassing activity along existing fissures suddenly increases."
