Tazawa was considered to be a late-Pleistocene caldera (Japan Assoc. Quat. Res. 1987), however Nakano et al. (2001-) noted that it is uncertain whether the depression was formed by volcanic activity. The elevation listed is that of the surface of Tazawa lake.---
