Tungurahua volcano news & eruption updates:

Tungurahua volcano (Ecuador), activity update: strong explosion on 28 May 2010 - ash plume to 10 km

Samstag Mai 29, 2010 15:19 |

Tungurahua volcano erupted violently on 08h47 local time on May 28, 2010, producing an vulcanian-style ash plume rising about 10 km above the crater and drifting SW until the Gulf of Guayaquil. The flanks of the volcano were showered with incandescent bombs, and ballistic projectiles fell into inhabited areas such as Chonglontus, Manzano and Yuibug on the W and SW slopes.
Pyroclastic flows descended the western and southwestern flanks into the sectors of Mapayacu, Yuibug and Choglontus.
The eruption produced loud cannon-shot and rumbling noises that were heard at far distance; the Geophysical Institute notes that many people in the NE provinces of Ecuador even thought that these sounds came from (also active) Reventador volcano which is nearer.
The activity remained at peak intensity for some hours and started to decline at around 13-14h00 on Friday. Since then and as of today, it has been continuing at "moderate to high" levels, with frequent explosions and smaller pyroclastic flows reaching about 1.5 km from the crater.
According to news, several villages around the volcano have been evacuated, and air traffic between Quito and Lima and around the Guayaquil airport is interrupted.

IG doesn't exclude further more energetic explosions.

Other lahars and small mudflows descended drainages to the NW and W. On 19 October a small lahar descended the Bilbao drainage to the W. [mehr]
