Gaua volcano (Vanuatu): strong eruption this morning, precautions ordered

A strong explosion took place at the volcano starting around 09:00 local time this morning.

A dark grey ash-rich column rose to estimated 6,000 ft (1,800 m) height and drifted SW. The eruption was heard by local witnesses in Naveto village of North-East Gaua.
The current activity of the volcano characterized by continuing gas and vapor emissions.
Therefore, the volcano observatory Vanuatu Meteorology and Geo-hazards Department (VMGD) raised the level of the major unrest status. The latest calculations of the activity are likely to continue at the remaining Level 2 or will increase to Level 3.
The current hazards are set up around the volcanic edifice. People and tourism agencies are advised to avoid the published danger zone due to the high risk of dissolved volcanic gases and/or ash emissions that may be harmful to health and vegetation.
Gaua is one of the most remote and most active volcanoes of the Vanuatu archipelago, located on the island with the same name in the West Banks island group at the northern end of the archipelago. The roughly 20-km-diameter Gaua Island, also known as Santa Maria, consists of a basaltic-to-andesitic stratovolcano with an 6 x 9 km wide summit caldera.
