Yasur volcano (Vanuatu): activity remains elevated

Strong explosion producing a dense ash plume early this morning (image: Geohazards webcam)

The volcano has been very active recently. Strombolian-type explosions are rather strong and sometimes produce dense ash plumes rising several hundred meters.
Visitors are warned from approaching the crater rims where the risk of being hit by lava bombs is elevated. Some of the recent ash emissions have been strong enough to trigger notices by Darwin's Volcanic Ash Advisory center to warn aircraft in the area.
