A strong earthquake of magnitude 6.9 occurred in the central mid-Atlantic ridge last evening. It was far from any populated areas and only very weak shaking could be felt by some people in the NE coastal areas of Brazil. No tsunami was generated by the event.
Seismic plot of the quake recorded by a seismic station in Riachuelo, Brazil
The quake resulted from extension along the spreading plate boundary between the South American and African plates, and the central Atlantic Ocean became probably a few cm wider as consequence.
