Small earthquake widely felt in Istanbul area, Turkey

A small, but felt earthquake occurred in the Marmara Sea 70 km SW of Istanbul this afternoon at 4:38 pm local time.

Many people in the metropolitan region felt the small tremor, which had a magnitude of around 4.0 and was at 12 km depth according to initial calculations. Fortunately, quakes of this size pose no significant hazard, but the region is affected by the very active and dangerous Anatolian fault system, which is capable of producing devastating large quakes of magnitudes 6-7.
