Significant magnitude 5.4 quake hits 62 km N of Pagan Village, Northern Mariana Islands
A magnitude 5.4 earthquake was reported only 13 minutes ago by the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam (GFZ), considered one of the key international agencies that monitor seismic activity worldwide. The earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km (6.2 miles) beneath the epicenter late at night on 20 October at 11.19 pm local time. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth could be revised within the next few minutes as the agency updates and refines its calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery also identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 5.4 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake was probably felt by many people in the area of the epicenter. It should not have caused significant damage, other than objects falling from shelves, broken windows etc.
Towns and cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Pagan Village (pop. 100) in 62 km (39 miles) distance with light shaking expected.
