Just 39 minutes ago early afternoon on Wednesday 28 October at 3.58 pm local time, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck near the city of Sakura, Japan, with a recorded depth of 73 km below the surface, considered intermediate in seismological terms.
The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.
A second report was later issued by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) agency, which listed it as a magnitude 4.8 earthquake as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Sakura (pop. 182,500) at a distance of 8 km with weak shaking, Yotsukaidō (pop. 86,700) at a distance of 9 km with weak shaking, Tokyo (pop. 8,336,600) at a distance of 42 km with weak shaking, and Yokohama (pop. 3,574,400) at a distance of 56 km with weak shaking.
