Light magnitude 4.6 quake hits 111 km northwest of Ambon, Indonesia in the evening

An earthquake of magnitude 4.6 occurred in the evening on Thursday 29 October 2020 at 8.11 pm local time near the city of Ambon, Indonesia, as reported by Indonesia's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency (BMKG). According to preliminary data, the quake was located at a shallow depth of 25 km. The magnitude, exact epicenter location and depth of the quake are likely to be revised within the next few hours as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.

Our monitoring service at VolcanoDiscovery identified a second report from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.6 as well.
Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.
Towns or cities near the epicenter that are likely to be affected include Ambon (pop. 355,600) at a distance of 111 km with weak shaking, and Amahai (pop. 47,700) at a distance of 152 km with very weak shaking.
